MuNiMulA's Aluminum
Aluminum comprises roughly 1/12 of the earth’s crust, but is never found as an elemental material. Bauxite ore is mined and chemically refined into alumina, which is a white powdery material that can then be electrically separated into molten aluminum ingot and carbon dioxide. Four pounds of basset are required to produce each pound of aluminum. Recycling saves 95% of the energy needed to produce aluminum from bauxite ore, and currently between 85 and 90% of aluminum is recycled.
Aluminum is then process into billet and different elements like silicon, manganese and copper are added to create alloys. Different combinations enhance properties such as strength and hardness. Aluminum can then be cast, spun or extruded.
Extruding aluminum has been compared to squeezing toothpaste from a tube where the paste takes the shape of the tube opening. An aluminum billet, heated to approximately 900 degrees F, is placed in the extrusion press and forced under pressure through a steel die. The die determines the desired finished cross section. Extrusions are desirable because they are strong, resilient heat and electrically conductive, nontoxic, reflective, nonsparking and nonmagnetic. They also respond well to bending, stamping, cutting and punching. Roughly 20% of total aluminum consumption in the United States is in the form of extrusions.
MuNiMulA relies on extrusions for its line of products. The process of fabrication beings with the design and fabrication of a custom die which matches their design specifications. Billet is forced through these dies at an extrusion plant as described above. From herewith fabrication takes place at their facility, cutting, machining, drilling, and welding to achieve a finished product. They use both MIG and TIG welding depending on the application.
Once the product is completed it is ready to be finished. MuNiMulA finishes all of their products by anodizing. This insures a durable protective finish that does not compromise the nature and feel of the metal Anodizing may be clear or in a range of colors. |
