 SERRALUNGA, is a firm located in Biella Itay with a 170 year tradition. Set up before the industrial revolution, the factory covers 12.000 m2 and employs 60 persons. Serralunga's concept is to reinterprete products made with traditional materials. Special attention is focused on the evolution of polymers and applying the most advanced technologies of plastic towards new objects and improving their use and functionality. With respect to traditional vases SERRALUNGA focuses great attention on creativity and taste of innovation, out of the ordinary, and on highest care for details both of exterior design and of functionality. As a plus the vase is interpreted with a little of the traditional Italian irony. Continuous research of new technologies in material processing and deep competences, at the heart of the design philosophy, made the Serralunga brand known at the international level as a dynamic symbol of Made in Italy design. With new product lines, Serralunga plays the delicate role of editor of outdoor furniture and accessories able to arrange the complexity of outdoor environment in a perspective where the boundary between inside/outside is fuzzy and where products are essential components of a whole that aims at better use of green areas.
PRODUCTS ENGINEERING
The winning product is always the result of an accurate planning analysis. Know-how, adequate moulds, manufacturing technics on the forefront, and careful choise of the raw material are the means necessary to achieve a successful product. A detailed analysis of the feasibilty which considers all the use tipologies, the essential quality requirements, the functional and aestheticals features, the quantities, leads to the carrying out of the project. Then, on demand, the first prototype is made in polystyrene, wood, chalk or resin. Once the suitability of the prototype has been checked, the adequate production techniques are identified and the moulds are designed and manufactured. A Particular attention is paid to the moulds. In fact, they represent the backbone of the final product. in its plants or in qualified workshops, Serralunga firm manufactures moulds up to dozens of imprints, assisting the customer from the project to the final product.
ROTATIONAL MOLDING
Inventiveness and studies about new products lead the way to several utilizations of this tecnology which is advantageous also for the manufacturing of low quantities. This last aspect is really important because of the reduction of the products life which call for constant innovations. The rotational moulding is conceived to manufacture hollow bodies, from medium sizes onwards, with powdered thermoplastic materials. The female mould, containing the material, is fired in a furnace and rotates on two perpendicular axis homogeneously melting the plastic on surfaces.
It does not exist a sector in which a rotomolded product is not interesting.
It is possible to obtain molded products without welding regular and homogeneous thickness. The products can also have big dimension, up to a volume of 2000 litres, with very elaborate and complex edges, with or without drowned inserts, with the possibility of obtaining sandblasted, embossed and artificial leather, superficial finishings. The manufactured articles are proof against low temperatures and chemical agents and can present a double surface, or be internally frothed to isolate and strengthen the product.
The moulds are projected in the firm and supervised during their manufacturing in or out the company. They can be made of plate to manufacture the simplest shapes or of alluminium casting to manufacture the most complicate ones. However, the costs of the equipment are quite low compared with other technologies.
At present it is possible to use linear or reticular polyethylene, PVC, polypropylene and polycarbonate, but the continuous researches extend, from year to year, the range of the available polymers.
Advantages of the rotomolding: less expensive moulds, possibility of producing limited series, possibility of manufacturing really complex and big shapes.
QUALITY CONTROL
The quality control of the product guarantees supplies with durable quality features. In order to reach this goal Serralunga firm is provided with adequate labour methodologies, as rigidous control of the raw materials and on line controls during the manufacturing. Besides, it is furnished with an efficient and well-equipped quality control laboratory, in which are used:
-controll sets MELT INDEX and VICAT grade,
-muffle furnace to control ashes and thermal trials,
-pendulum for shock tests with Charpy and Izod mthodologies,
-dynamometer for tensile, torsion and compression mechanical tests,
-samples cutter,
-analytic weighting machine,
-graphic dectector of the performed analysis.
